Runners High, A Documentary Film about SRO, Earns Critical Acclaim
During the 2004 and 2005 seasons, independent filmmakers Justine Jacob and Alex da Silva produced a feature-length documentary about Students Run Oakland called Runners High. The film debuted at the San Francisco International Film Festival in Spring of 2006 and has earned rave reviews from critics and audiences. In early October, the film screened at the Grand Lake Theatre in Oakland in conjunction with a successful fundraiser for SRO. SRO wishes to thank all the members of the community who came to see the film and who attended the pre-screening fundraiser.
Runners High focuses on four students whose lives were changed for the better by their participation in SRO. The film shows how they confronted numerous challenges while training to run 26.2 miles, and it also spotlights the dedication of SRO’s Executive Director Spencer Hooper, Coach Alphonzo Jackson, and many SRO volunteers. A reviewer for the Toronto Star called it “pure inspiration every step of the way.”
